A 20-year-old skateboarder remained hospitalized Thursday after being struck by a vehicle on Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea.

The man suffered severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway and Puanuanu Place in Waimea, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Police determined that a red 1988 Nissan Hardbody pickup truck was heading west on Mamalahoa Highway when it struck the skateboarder who was riding in the westbound lane of traffic. The rider was then ejected from the skateboard.

The man, a Waimea resident, was transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment where he was last listed in critical condition.

The driver of the Nissan pickup, a 31-year-old Waimea man, was not injured in the crash.

Police do not believe that speed or impairment are factors in the collision.
