Police arrested 15 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Dec. 20 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Puna officers arrested four drivers while South Kohala and South Hilo officers arrested three in each district, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, Kona and Hamakua officers arrested two drivers in each district and North Kohala one.

So far this year, there have been 1,057 DUI arrests compared with 993 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 800 major accidents so far this year compared with 762 during the same period last year.

As of Sunday, 26 fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2020, 15 people had died.
