Rudolph Angelo

Rudolph “Rudy” Antone Angelo, 84, of Kukuihaele, died Oct. 7, 2021 in Kona. Born Oct. 26, 1936, in Haina, Maui, he worked in the telecommunications industry after proudly serving in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by sisters, Emma Paiva of Ahualoa and Bernice Andrade of Santa Monica, California; brother, Norman (Barbara) Angelo of Ewa Beach, Oahu; sister-in-law, Nellie Angelo of Kukuihaele; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Paul Malec

Raul Raymond Malec, 68, of Kailua-Kona, died July 7, 2021 at Kona Community Hospital. He was born July 4, 1952 in Peoria, Illinois.

Herman Richards

Herman Maluhia Richards, 32, of Mountain View, died Dec. 18, 2021, in Kailua-Kona. He was born Nov. 27, 1989.

He is survived by mother, Ellen Richards of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Nevaeh Mendoza of Hilo; sisters, Mohala Mahi, Summer (Brandon Shaver) Richards, Cara Richards, Shannon (Mathew) Ahn, and Maria Caay; brothers, Kamakaokalani (Aulani Navarro) Brown-Mahi, Carl (Jaslyn) Richards, and Palasi Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James Sagucio

James “Jimmy” Jaime Sagucio, 88, of Kapaau, died Dec. 24, 2021, in Hilo. Born in Hawi, he was retired from Hawaii Preparatory Academy and former Kohala Sugar Co., had worked for the state Highways Division in Waimea, U.S. Army Korean War veteran and member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hawi and Kohala Senior Citizens.

Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 19 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for a 9:30 a.m. Mass. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers. Urn committal service at a later date.

He is survived by wife, Stella Sagucio of Kapaau; daughter, Laura (Severino Jr.) Urubio of Hilo; son, Jay (Donna) Sagucio of Waimea; brother, Joseph (Fusako) Sagucio of Florida; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Richard Reddick

Richard Reddick, 72, of Hilo, died Dec. 26, 2021 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. He was born in Camden, South Carolina, and was a retired first sergeant with the U.S. Army and founder of Reddick’s Enterprise Yard Manicure, a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters, Court Mauna Kea #8854, the Sons and Daughters of Hawaii, and the Prostate Cancer Support Group.

Services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by wife, Lorraine Reddick of Hilo; sons, Joseph (Suzette) Nunuha of Honolulu, Montgomery (Cher Decambra) Mercado of Waimea and Conrade (Laurie) Mercado of Hilo; daughter, Carrie (Joe Jr.) Kyles of Camarillo, California; sisters, Lola Reddick and Frances (Jackson) Dozier of Brooklyn, New York, Johnnie Reddick, Mary (Benny) Weathers and Margie Preston of Camden, South Carolina; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.

Sophia Martines

Sophie Martines, 86, of Waimea, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2021 at her residence. Born in Paauilo, she was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. Jan. 12 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa for 7 p.m. Mass. Friends may also call from 11 a.m to noon at East Hawaii Cemetery No. 2 (Pavilion) for viewing; burial to follow.

She is survived by daughters, Susan (Dale) Williams off Bremerton, Washington and Julie (Dean) Fujitani of Waimea; sister, Violet Meeks of Torrence, California; and three grandchildren.

James Otani

James Makoto Otani, 83, of Hilo, died Jan. 1, 2022, at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a U.S. Army veteran, former chief steward for American Hawaii Cruises, former assistant manager of Food and Beverage at Naniloa Hotel and numerous hotels in Waikiki, Oahu.

Private services. Family requests no monetary gifts.

He is survived by hanai son, Tyler Wells of Colorado; hanai daughter, Raven Wells of California; brother, Noriaki (Fujie) Otani of Hilo; sister, Lorraine Matsu of Hilo; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Gilbert De Motta

Gilbert G. De Motta, 89, of Hilo, died Dec. 20, 2021. He was a U.S. Army veteran and member of the Army Reserve and well-known in the tourist industry, ILWU, and affordable and elder housing development.

Private Services. A celebration of life is planned.

He is survived by wife, Hannah De Motta; children, Dr. Howard (Lyn) De Motta of Mililani, Oahu, Gayle (Kenneth) Higa of Wainaku and Wesly (Selena) De Motta of Pepeekeo; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Joanne Tamala

Joanne Nalani Tamala, 74, of Hilo died Nov. 20, 2021, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she was a homemaker and a member of Glad Tidings Church and its Women’s Ministry.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Jan. 15 at Glad Tidings Church in Hilo for an 11 a.m. celebration of life. Casual attire.

She is survived by husband, Tad Tamala of Hilo; children, Jason Ishii and Royden (Vanessa) Ishii, all of Waimea, Mark (Paula) Ishii and Dawn Ishii, all of Hilo, and Preston Tamala of Washington; siblings, Beverly Gonsalves of Hilo, Winona (Mike) Hooser of Waikoloa, Joel Ravey of Honolulu, and Ipo (Pancho) Carvalho of Kohala; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
