Police arrested 15 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Jan. 3 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Puna officers arrested six drivers while South Kohala and Puna officers arrested three in each district, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, South Hilo officers arrested two drivers and North Hilo officers one.

So far this year, there have been two dozen DUI arrests compared with 43 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 18 major accidents so far this year compared with 16 during the same period last year.

As of Tuesday, two fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2021, one person had died.
