The Marine Corps League Camp Tarawa Detachment hosted its first S.O.S. Cook-Off Saturday during its first in-person meeting in months at Kona’s VFW and online.

It was a very close vote, but Lora Scott won first place in the Cook-Off. S.O.S., or “Stuff on a Shingle” is a version of creamed chipped beef on toast. There are many stories of the origin of S.O.S. about its first being served during World War I in France.

Most Marines found different mess halls made it differently. Some cooks kept to Marine Corps recipes; some cooks improvised or just used what they had on hand — there was little or no waste. For most Marines, it brings back some memories of their days in the Marine Corps.

The Marine Corps League Camp Tarawa Detachment was named after Camp Tarawa that was a Marine base on Parker Ranch land in Waimea.

All Marines, past and present, FMF Corpsmen, and FMF Navy Chaplains and family members and supporters of Marines are welcome to join The Marine Corps League Camp Tarawa Detachment at the VFW off Kaiwi Street in Kailua-Kona. The group meets at 12:30 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of each month.
