Big Island police arrested 29 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Feb. 28 and Sunday. Nine of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash; one was younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested nine drivers while South Hilo officers arrested 12 and Puna officers five, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, North Kohala officers arrested two drivers and South Kohala officers one.
So far this year, there have been 213 DUI arrests compared with 219 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 128 major accidents so far this year compared with 135 during the same period last year.
As of Tuesday, eight fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2021, five people had died.
