Hawaii Police Department officers arrested 23 motorists for suspected drunken driving between April 18 and Sunday. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash; one was younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested 10 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested eight and Puna officers five, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 346 DUI arrests compared with 404 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 234 major accidents so far this year compared with 251 during the same period last year.

A dozen fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2021, eight people had died.
