Volunteers came together to malama Hawaii Saturday in celebration of Earth Day.

Some 64 people turned out for the Earth Day Cleanup at Puako Boat Ramp held by nonprofit Keep Puako Beautiful. Volunteers removed debris from land as well as sea during the event, ridding the ‘aina of some 2,044 pieces of trash weighing 264 pounds.

The next opportunity to help clean up the island will be June 4 at Kawaihae Surf Park in celebration of National Trails Day and World Ocean and Reef DayKeep Puako Beautiful is partnering with the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, state Department of Transportation and others for the event at the Pua Ka‘ilima Surf Park and the Coral Flats.

The organization is looking for volunteers to help make 8 a.m. to noon event a success. Needed are communication/media experts, site helpers, donations of snacks and drinks, educators for land and water safety and stewardship, donations of small “door prizes.” and ideas for fun events for kids.
