According to an article published by CNN Thursday night, Rep. Kai Kahele, D-Hawaii, is retiring from Congress at the end of his term, a source familiar with the matter told the news outlet.

The Hilo native had been telling colleagues that he intends to run for governor, according to someone close to him.

They also said Kahele will make an announcement about his political future in early May.

It was previously reported by Honolulu Civil Beat that Kahele was considering a run for governor this year.

The congressman, who has yet to release an official statement, was elected in 2020 to replace Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
