Jodean Dela Cruz

Jodean Marie Dela Cruz, 76, of Hilo, died Dec. 11, 2021 at her residence. Born June 5, 1945 in Michigan City, Indiana, she was a retired school teacher and administrator for the state Department of Education, member of the U.S. Peace Corps in the Philippines and a quilter.

Services held.

She is survived by husband, Romel Dela Cruz of Hilo; sons, Rene (Mina) Dela Cruz of Las Vegas and Jason (Mimi) Dela Cruz of Hilo; sisters, Kathleen (Ronald) Heinrich of Colorado and Rebecca Schneider of Michigan; sister-in-law, Alice (Clyde) Dela Cruz-Bailado of Paauilo; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Roland Sarmiento

Roland Isidro Sarmiento, 50, of Mountain View died April 18, 2022, at his residence. Born in Honolulu, he was a maintenance engineer for Five Star Maintenance and a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Wailuku, Maui.

Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. May 7 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Keaau, Mass at 10. Cremation to follow. Friends may also call at 9:30 a.m. May 13 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Wailuku, Maui; eulogy at 10:15 with a memorial Mass to follow at 10:30. Casual attire. He is survived by daughters, Saphire Sarmiento of Mountain View, Emrald (Michael) Sarmiento Gainey of Columbia, South Carolina; son, Joshua Sarmiento of Mountain View; granddaughter, Khalessi Gainey of Columbia, South Carolina; hanai daughters, Katelyn Comer and Kayla Comer, both of Mountain View; fiancee, Kimberlee Rapoza of Mountain View; father, Rolando Sarmiento of Tacoma, Washington; sisters, Paula (Robert) Iiams of Mountain View, Melissa (George) Namauu of Wailuku, and Renee (Christopher) Ross of Sulphur Springs, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Margaret Hoshida

Margaret Magdalene Hoshida, 68, of Hawi died Feb. 6, 2022, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Kohala, she was a retired unit secretary at the North Hawaii Community Hospital and former president of the Hawaiian Civic Club in Kohala.

Friends may call at 2 p.m. May 6 at Keokea Beach Park Pavilion in Kapaau for a celebration of life. Casual attire.

She is survived by daughter, Naomi Hoshida of Hawi; sons, Earl (Taylor) Hoshida and Aric (Shaelyn) Hoshida, all of Hawi; sister, Debbie (Robert) Ellazar of Kohala; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Herlund

Mary Ayako (Sakamoto) Hernlund, 103, of Hilo, died April 19, 2022, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in San Luis Obispo, California, she was a retired orchid lab technician, member of the Square Dance Club, Slewfoot Promenaders, Club Wednesday Golf Club, Club 36, Hului Golf Club, AJA Woman’s Golf Club, Japanese Community Association, and a former member of the Hilo Orchid Society and the Hilo Shippers and Florist Association.

She is survived by son, Dennis (Tommi) Tokumaru of Santa Barbara, California; daughter, Janet Tokumaru (Dennis Kobata) of Torrance, California; brother, Rick Herman (Carolyn) Sakamoto of Las Vegas; sister-in-law, Connie Sakamoto of Thousand Oaks, California; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John Oliveira Jr.

John Oliveira Jr., 84, of Papaikou, died March 26, 2022, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired police sergeant with the Hawaii Police Department.

He is survived by wife, Adeline Fujisawa Oliveira of Papaikou; sons, Darryl (Janice) Oliveira of Hilo and Timothy (Shellie) Oliveira of Colorado; daughters, Lia (Warren) Shaw of Waimea and Lynn (Eric) Nishioka of Hilo; brother, George (Dorothy) Oliveira of Montana; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Glen Hathaway

Glen Harden Hathaway, 101, of Hilo, died April 15, 2022 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. He was born in Heavener, Oklahoma.

Morris Nakaishi

Morris Kieo Nakaishi, 94, of Hilo, died Feb. 23, 2022, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Kumamoto, Japan, he was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, carpenter supervisor with Isemoto Contracting Co. Ltd., and the former M. Sonomura Contracting Co., Inc. and S.K. Oda Ltd., member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, Hilo AJA Bowling Club, Bonsai master and instructor at the Kamana Senior Center Bonsai Class, president of the Mokuhonua Bonsai Club, senior advisor at the Hilo Bonsai Kyoshitsu, altar decorator for all Hanatate special services at the Hilo Betsuin, and a volunteer at the Wailoa Visitor Center.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. May 7 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service. Casual attire, no flowers and no koden (monetary offerings).

He is survived by son, Russell (Beryl) Nakaishi of Westminster, California; brother-in-law, Hideo Kida of Pearl City, Oahu; and two granddaughters.

Wilson-Leonardo Hernandez

Wilson-Leonardo Espiritu Hernandez, 63 of Kapaau died April 17, 2022 in Kapaau. Born Dec. 11, 1958, in the Philippines, he worked as a landscaper.

Cosmedin Quiocho Sr.

Cosmedin Benaza Quiocho Sr., 91, of Hilo, died April 10, 2022, at his residence. Born Oct. 29, 1930, in Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was retired from the former Hilo Coast Processing Co., Hawaii Army National Guard veteran and member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church and ILWU Pensioner Club.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. May 11 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 6 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 8:30 a.m. May 12 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for a 9:30 a.m. Mass. Burial to follow at Alae Cemetery. Family requests face masks and casual attire.

James Branco

James “Uncle James” Enoka Branco, 57, of Hilo, died April 8, 2022, at The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu. Born Aug. 22, 1964 in Hilo, he was a heavy equipment operator and owner (protector) of Branco’s Farm (Waiakea Uka Homestead), and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. May 6 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo; eulogy at 10:15 a.m.; Mass at 10:30 a.m.; cremation to follow. Aloha attire.
