Dozen arrested for drunken driving last week

Hawaii Police Department officers arrested a dozden motorists for suspected drunken driving between April 25 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash; one was younger than age 21.

Puna officers arrested five drivers while Kona and South Hilo officers arrested three drivers in each district, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala officers arrested one motorist.

So far this year, there have been 358 DUI arrests compared with 427 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 257 major accidents so far this year compared with 269 during the same period last year.

A dozen fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways as of Tuesday, police said. By that time in 2021, eight people had died.
