A 64-year-old Hilo woman died Thursday after an apparent hit-and-run traffic collision Wednesday in Hilo.
Police responding to the at 7:59 a.m. Wednesday traffic collision discovered that that victim, identified as Carrie Ikawa, was outside her parked vehicle, a 2018 Ford pickup truck, located on Hualalai Street near Ululani Street, when she was struck by a 2013 white-colored Ford Explorer traveling north on Hualalai Street.
Ikawa suffered multiple injuries from the traffic collision and was transported to the Hilo Medical Center in critical condition. She was subsequently transported to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu for further treatment. She died 1:46 p.m. Thursday.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing to investigate this traffic collision through the examination of the vehicles, evidence, and information obtained via witnesses.

This is the 16th traffic fatality this year on Hawaii Island public roads. By this time in 2021, just nine had died.
