Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for suspected drunken driving between May 23 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 15; Puna and South Hilo, four each; and Hamakua, one.

So far this year, there have been 444 DUI arrests compared 511 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13.1%.

There have been 318 major accidents so far this year compared to 325 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.15%.

To date, there have been 17 official traffic fatalities, compared to 11 fatalities for thesame time last year, an increase of 54.55%. There was also one vehicle-related death the police don’t count on their official tally, because it occurred within the boundaries of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
