Rodney Miyashiro Sr.

Rodney Jackson Miyashiro Sr., 77, of Honolulu and formerly of Hilo died April 18, 2022, at his residence. Born in Hilo, he was the owner of RJ Miyashiro Truck Rentals &Service, a member of the Hawaii Horse Owners Association and American Team Roping Association and a U.S. Army veteran.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. June 25 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service. Committal service at noon June 27 at the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 Pavilion. Casual attire; no flowers.

He is survived by companion, Rose Keawe of Keaau; daughters, Rosalynn Bee and Neysa Miller of Honolulu; sons, Marvin Miyashiro and Rodney Miyashiro Jr. of Hilo, Jared Miyashiro of San Diego and Travis Miyashiro of Honolulu; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, uncles, aunties, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Rhea Akoi

Rhea Kalaniopuupoo-hunaikeaopolohiwa Enos Akoi, 94, of Keaukaha, died June 11, 2022, at her residence. Born in Hilo, she was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—Keaukaha Ward, employed at Hawaiian Telephone Co. and American Factors as an operator, a Special Aide Educational Assistant at Keaukaha Elementary School, an entertainer and musician and a member of the Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna Program.

Friends amy call at 9 a.m. June 23 at Hilo Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Service at 11 a.m. Committal service will follow at the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 Pavilion. Church or aloha attire.

She is survived by daughters, Bobbilyn Akoi of Hilo, Raynette (Rick) Francom of Utah and Judi (Maka) Adolpho of Oahu; sons, Bobby (Hiromi) Akoi and Jay (Haunani) Akoi of Oahu; 17 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Julia Kaehuaea

Julia “Julie” Kalahiki Kaehuaea, 76, of Hilo died June 3, 2022, at her residence. Born in Honolulu, she was a retired staff sergeant with the U.S. Army during the Persian Gulf War and a member of the Ka’ahumanu Society.

Friends may call st noon June 24 at the East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 for an inurnment service. Casual attire.

She is survived by children, Sheri (Warren) Kaehuaea-Hanoa of Oahu, and Aaron (Monica Young) Chock of Hilo; brothers, William Kaehuaea Jr. of Renton, Washington, and Wendell Kaehuaea of Hilo; caregiver, Julia Hoke of Hilo; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Carl Gastilo

Carl W. “Wayne” “Kazu” Gastilo, 73, of Keaau, died June 14, 2022 at Pohai Malama. Born Jan. 15, 1949, on Oahu, he was a U.S. Navy Vietnam War veteran, worked at Nakamoto Concrete &Masonry and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. June 25 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Keaau. Celebration of life at noon.

He is survived by wife, Yvonne Gastilo of Keaau; son, Jace (Maelia) Gastilo of Keaau; daughters, Roxanne (Beau) Lumanlan of Waikaloa and Cheris (Kalae) Keala of Keaau; brother, George Gastilo of Keaau; sisters, Carmalita (Steve) Marsden of California, Debra (Allen) Diego of Maui, and Melisa Boteilho of Hilo; three grandchildren; one great-granson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen Shima

Helen Chieko Shima, 94, of Hilo, died June 13, 2022, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Papaaloa, she was a retired Postmaster for the Papaaloa Post Office, member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and the former Papaaloa Hongwanji Mission and Fujinkai. For many years, she volunteered at the Life Care Center, Hilo Medical Center and the Waiakea Intermediate School Cafeteria.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. June 29 Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 10 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no monetary gifts.

She is survived by husband, Hiroshi Shima of Hilo; daughters, Ella (William) Maneely of Maryland, and Judy (Ritch) Voss of California; son, Wallace (Sylvia Tat) Shimabukuro of California; sister, Noriko Ikemoto of California; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
