Kiyoshi Hamakawa

Kiyoshi Hamakawa, 92, died April 13, 2022, in Hilo. Born in Hilo, he was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, teacher and coach at Konawaena High, Keaau Intermediate and Hilo Intermediate schools and vice principal at Hilo High School

Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary offerings).

He is survived by wife, Mikako (Nagami), sons Bruce (Shirley), Curt (Diane), and Eric (Sara); daughter, Donna (Chris) Paulachak; five grandchildren; one hanai granddaughter; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Teruo (Tamayo) Nagami; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Jimmy Aka

Jimmy Moreketai Aka, 57, died April 28, 2022, in Keaau. Born Jan. 30, 1965, in Hakahau, Ua Pou, French Polynesia, he traveled and served in Christian ministries, including Youth With A Mission Kona &Guam and Island Breeze Hawaii, was maintenance worker, glazier, to a fuel tank laborer for Dunkin &Bush and Willbros Government Services, and member of New Hope Canoe Club.

Services held.

He is survived by wife, Lita Cavin-Aka; daughter, Elilai Aka-Burch, sons, Samuel Aka and Kaohanui Aka; two grandsons; son-in-law Aaron Burch; mother, Tahiahau Aka; sisters, Rose and Muriel; and brothers, Yvon Titan and Joseph Hiuputoka.

Thomas Summons Jr.

Thomas Henry Summons Jr., 81 of Hilo died July 8, 2022, at his residence. Born in Miami, he was a retired architect and U.S. Air Force veteran.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. July 18 at Glad Tidings Church in Hilo; celebration of life at 11. Casual attire. Condolences may be sent to 24 Makalika St., Hilo, HI 96720.

He is survived by wife, Lorraine Godoy of Hilo; children, James (Theresa) Summons of Indianapolis, Indiana, Saundra (Shaygan Shakeri) McPherson of Pleasant Hill, California, Sean (Naemi Tanaka) McPherson of Providence, Rhode Island, Michelle McPherson of Pleasant Hill, California, and John (Mary Jane) Peter McPherson of San Francisco; siblings, Sara Summons of Stamford, Connecticut, Thomasina Woida of Alameda, California, andGrecian Logan of HaverHill, Massachusetts; in-laws, Renee Godoy of Hilo, Margaret (Roy) Nuniez of Kurtistown, Chris (Anita) Godoy of Waimea, and Raymond Pieri of Kona; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Raymond Adrian Sr.

Raymond John Adrian Sr., 74, of Hilo died June 19, 2022, at his residence. Born in Hilo, he was a musician, retired as a truck driver for Yamada &Sons and was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. July 22 at Dodo Mortuary chapel; memorial prayer service at 10. Scattering of ashes will take place July 23. Aloha/casual attire.

He is survived by children, Raymond Adrian Jr. of Hilo, Rayline (Ronnie) Petitt of Alexandria, Virginia, Robert Denis Adrian of Maui, and Ryan Estabilio of Kona; sister, Pauline (Wally) Astrande of Keaau; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jeanette Cortez

Jeanette Mae “Jeanie Mae” Cortez, 84, of Hilo, died June 20, 2022. Born April 19, 1938 in Hilo, she was a homemaker.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. July 23 at Ballard Family Mortuary Hilo; service at 11. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at Alae Cemetery.

She is survived by sons, Brian Santos, Patrick (Doris) Santos, Clifford Santos, and Starsky (Sheryl) Cortez; daughters, Darlene Santos, Shana Santos, and Lacina Pagan; 36 grandchildren; and 50 great-grandchildren.
