Lola Pua

Lola Jean Pua, 72, of Holualoa, died June 1, 2022 at Kona Community Hospital. Born May 21, 1950, in Kealakekua, she was a pastry chef at the Hilton Waikoloa Hotel and a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church.

Services will be held at a later date.

She is survived by daughters, Cindy (Clarence) Santiago of Alabama, Mindy Pua of Kealakekua and Davilynn (Conrad Chong) Pua of Holualoa; son, Lyle Pua of Ocean View; sister, Haunani (Reuben Kaluau) Rodrigues of Ocean View; brother, Braddah Hose of Honaunau; half-brother, Keoki (Kimi) Brown of Hilo; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kiyoko Sakai

Kiyoko Sakai, 95, of Hilo, died June 17, 2022, at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center in Hilo. Born June 15, 1927, in Olaa (Keaau), she was the former co-owner and manager of Hilo Puanani Flower Shop, co-proprietress of “Aqua & Aviary Hobbyist” (a.k.a. “Sakai Pet Shop”), and member of Taishoji Soto Mission in Hilo.

Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary offerings).

She is survived by daughter, Toni Sakai-Kawada of Hilo; son-in-law, Rogers Uchima of Hilo; brothers-in-law, Richard (Elizabeth) Sakai of Hilo and Noble (Fusae) Sakai of Texas; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins.

John Alapai

John Adam Alapai, 57, of Kailua-Kona, died July 5, 2022 at his residence. Born May 5, 1965, in Kealakekua, he was a truck driver for Big Island Top Soil, Matsuyama Brothers Trucking and West Hawaii Concrete.

A private service was held.

He is survived by wife, Phyllis Alapai of Kailua-Kona; sons, Tyson (Angela) Alapai of Kalaoa, and Ziggy (Jasmine) Alapai of Redmond, Washington; daughters Melissa (Chad) Chong Tim of Kalaoa, Shayla (Chey) Chong Tim of Oahu and Chanell (Pedro) Castro of Kailua-Kona; brothers, Kekio (Harmony) Alapai of Keaau and William (Laverne) Alapai of Kealakekua; sister Courtney Alapai of Kahaluu; 14 grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sandra Botelho

Sandra Lee (Hoover) Botelho, 83, of Arizona and formerly of North Kohala, died June 30, 2022, in Marana, Arizona. Born Sept. 16, 1938, in Lansing, Michigan, she was a retired bus driver, teacher’s aid, ukulele instructor and path finder leader for the Kohala Mission School, and member of the Kohala Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. July 30 at Hawi Seventh Day Adventist Church; service at 10:30, followed by inurnment at the church’s cemetery.

She is survived by sons, John (Merlyn) Botelho of Hawi, Paul (Robin) Botelho of North Carolina, Joseph (Joni) Botelho of Marana, Arizona, James Botelho, Jeff Goddard, Rich Schneider of Maine; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Sharon Botelho of Kapaau, and Bonnie Botelho of Colorado; brother-in-law, Bob Morikawa of Honolulu; and hanai sister, Patricia Cabral-Takata of California.

Donald Savella

Donald “Dino” ”Mr. D” Jose Savella, 86, of Pahoa, died June 26, 2022 in Hawaii. Born in Hilo, he was an avid hunter, fisherman, musical entertainer independently and with the David Chung Trio at the Islanders Night Club, served in the Hawaii National Guard, retired from both GTE Hawaiian Tel and Hawaii County Band, and worked at Keonepoko Elementary School.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Aug. 1 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for visitation; service at 11.

He is survived by wife, Lorraine (Okuna) Savella of Hawaii; children, Donn-Jay, Laura, Darnel, and Lean (DeeDee), Savella of Hawaii; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Catherine Ah Choy

Catherine “Cathy” D. Ah Choy, 47, of Ookala, died June 24, 2022, at The Queens’s North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Honokaa, she worked for R. Sakata Insurance was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Laupahoehoe.

Friends may call from 8 to 10 a.m. July 30 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for visitation, service at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Alae Cemetery (New Section) at 1:15 p.m.

She is survived by husband, Bradford Ah Choy of Ookala; sons, Austyn (Stacia Cacatian) Ah Choy and Daysen Ah Choy of Ookala; mother, Encarnation Datuin of Kapehu, and Juliann (George) Gascon of Waimea; brother, Richard Datuin of Kapehu; father- and mother-in-law Joseph (Pauline) Ah Choy, Jr. of Papaaloa; brothers in-law, Joseph (Pauline) Ah Choy Jr. of Papaaloa, Sheldon (Noel) Ah Choy of Ookala and Joseph (Denise) Ah Choy III of Hawaiian Paradise Park; sister in-law, Tenille Ah Choy of Ookala; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Emiko Hamakawa

Emiko Hamakawa, 93, of Hilo, died Dec. 19, 2021 at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. She was born in Hilo and was a retired office assistant at the Hilo Medical Center.

Visitation 4-5 p.m. July 29 at Dodo Mortuary chapel. Celebration of lifes Service will be held at 5 p.m. Private urn committal services at a later date. Aloha attire; no koden (monetary offerings).

She is survived by daughter, Dale Hamakawa of San Francisco; sons, Gary (Darlene) Hamakawa of Honolulu, Craig (Lyn) Hamakawa of San Francisco, and Ron Hamakawa of Seattle; brothers, Harold Mimaki of Hilo and Harry Mimaki of Honolulu; sisters-in-law, Keiko Mimaki and Mikako Hamakawa of Hilo; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Dennis Shioshita

Dennis Takeo Shioshita, 74, of Hilo, died July 3, 2022, at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Hilo, he was retired from Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, a U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran and member of Hilo Hooganji Mission and Hilo Meishoin.

Private services held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

He is survived by brother, Robert (Evonne) Shioshita of Pahoa; sisters, Jean (Raymond) Asuncion of Simi Valley, Calif., Patsy Shioshita of Los Angeles, Gail Shioshita of Hilo, Judy Shioshita of New York; an aunt; an uncle; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Priscilla Reynolds

Priscilla J. Reynolds, 80, of Honokaa, died May 15, 2022. Born Dec. 14, 1941 in Haina, she was a homemaker.

Services will be held July 30 with visitation at 9 a.m. and Mass at 10 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Honokaa. No flowers (lei will be accepted).

She is survived by son, James Reynolds Jr. of Honokaa; brother, Ronald (Linda) Gonsalves of Haina; sister, Stella Vaughn of Hilo; sister-in-law, Jeanette Reynolds-Santos of Hilo; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
