Jame Sakata

Jame “Bubba” Aola Hideo Sakata, 13, of Holualoa, died June 24, 2022 at Kona Community Hospital. Born July 19, 2008 in Kealakekua, he was a former student at Holualoa Elementary School and Kua O Ka La NPCS.

Services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by parents, Jamie and Deana Sakata of Holualoa, sisters, Briann (Quentin Grace) Sakata, Ashley Sakata, Kela Sakata and Kelynn Sakata, all of Holualoa; grandmothers, Carol Sakata of Holualoa and Kathleen Ke of Pahala; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Irineo Jara

Irineo “Irin” S. Jara, 86, of Naalehu, died July 19, 2022, at his residence. Born in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a retired sugar processor for the former Ka’u Sugar Co., worked for Mac Farms and member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Naalehu.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. July 30 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Naalehu for a Rosary at 9:30 a.m. and funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial follows at Naalehu Community Cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Lali Jara; daughter, Kathy (Jasper) Jara; granddaughter, Maylani; sisters, Ludivina Sevilleja, Martina Jara, Lucena Guzman, and Conchita Jara; sisters-in-law, Editha (Aaron) Kaneshiro, Erlinda Oganiza, and Elisa (Rogelio) Hullana; brother-in-law, Floro (Dolly) Cauton; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

Duane Sugihara

Duane Yoshimasa Sugihara, 77, of Hilo, died June 6, 2022 at Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation &Nursing Center. Born Dec. 13, 1944, in Hilo, he was a retired insurance agent for First Insurance Company and retired from Business Insurance Services in Hilo, and a member and Rooster of the Lehua Jaycees, Halai Kumiai and Hilo United Methodist Church.

Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary offerings).

He is survived by wife, Naomi Sugihara of Hilo; sons, Tod Sugihara and Lon Sugihara, both of Hilo; sister, Donna (Eric) Higuchi of Hilo; one niece; and numerous cousins.

Frederick Madariaga

Frederick Madariaga, 90, of Hilo, died July 13, 2022, at a foster care home in Hilo. Born June 20, 1932, in Ola’a, he was a welder at the former Puna Sugar Co., U.S. Marine Corps Korean War veteran and member of Puna Covenant Church.

Private services held.

He is survived by son, Alan (Younghey) Madariaga of Las Vegas; daughter, Celia Madariaga of Tustin, California; brother, John (Shirley) Macadangdang of Kaneohe, Oahu; sisters-in-law, Maggie Macadangdang of Hilo, and Alice (George) Ishibashi of Torrance, California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Caroline Ching

Caroline Ching, 77, of Kapaau, died June 29, 2022 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born Aug. 24, 1944, in North Kohala, she was a prep cook at Mauna Lani Resort and an attendee at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hawi.

Visitation will be held at 8:45 a.m. Aug. 13 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hawi; Mass at 10 a.m. The family requests casual attire.

She is survived by husband, Lester Ching; daughter, Regina Reyes; son, Herbert Ching, all of Kapaau; brother, Rudolph Macanas of Hilo; sisters, Florence Adones of California and Linda Naihe of Kapaau; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Leilani Hino

Leilani Suzanne Hino, 78, of Honokaa died July 7, 2022, at her residence. Born in Honokaa, she was a retired director of community affairs at the Mauna Lani Bay Resorts, formerly worked for the Hawaii Tribune-Herald and West Hawaii Today, and member of the Honokaa Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association and other various organizations.

Visitation from 4 to 5 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Honokaa Hongwanji Mission; funeral service at 5. Casual attire. Family requests no flowers.

She is survived by sons, The Rev. R.K. Moki (Dixie Kaetsu) Hino of Wailuku, and Paul (Rebecca) Noble of Virginia Beach, Virginia; sister, Jan Hino of Ahualoa; and one granddaughter.

Masae Kayoda

Masae Kayoda, 92, died Sept. 13, 2021, in Mountain View. Born March 16, 1929, in Kapoho, she was a waitress at Tropics Restaurant in Waikiki and a member/driving force of the AFL Local Five hotel and food service workers union, prepaered and sold foods at Cooper Center.

She is survived by hanai garden sister, Debbie Ward; hanai flower sister Maile Rogan; daughters, Karen Brown and Kim Kayoda; grandaughter, Hillary Phouivanhny; and three great-grandchildren.
