Richards and Tancheff to face off for Senate District 4; Kanuha retains District 3

Outgoing Kohala County Councilman Tim Richards will face Republican Nicholas Tancheff in the Nov. 8 general election for the North and South Kohala seat in the state House of Representatives.

The district, covering North Hawaii, had no incumbent due to redistricting.

As of the second report issued by the state Office of Elections at 10:26 p.m. Saturday, Richards received 6,430 votes — or 72.4% of Democratic Party votes cast in the election. As the only Democrat running Saturday, he advances to the general election to face Tancheff, who garnered 1,717 Republican Party votes.

Meanwhile, incumbent state Sen. Dru Kahuna (D-Kona, Ka‘u) will retain his seat as he faced no challengers in the primary election. Kanuha, who recieved 6,315 votes, was first elected to the state Senate in 2018 after serving on the Hawaii County Council.

In the state House, Democratic incumbent David Tarnas will face Republican candidate Monique Cobb Adams Perreira in the general election for State House District 8.

Tarnas garnered 2,819 or 62.7% of the vote over his opponent Makai Frietas, who secured 1,216 or 27.1% of votes cast for the North and South Kohala seat.

Perreira ran unopposed on the Republican ticket and received 849 votes in Saturday’s primary election.
