Hawaii Police Department officers arrested 26 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Aug. 29 and Sunday. Six of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash and four were younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested 10 drivers while Puna officers arrestred seven and South Hilo officers five, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. North Kohala officers arrested an additional three drivers while South Kohala officers arrested one.

So far this year, there have been 685 DUI arrests compared with 783 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 557 major accidents so far this year compared with 543 during the same period last year.

Twenty-six fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year. By this time in 2021, 16 people had died.
