Police arrest 12 for suspected drunken driving

Hawaii Police Department officers arrested 12 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Sept. 5 and Sunday. Two of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash and two were younger than age 21.

Puna officers arrested four drivers while Kona and South Hilo officers arrested three in each district, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. North Kohala and Hamakua officers arrested on driver in each district.

So far this year, there have been 697 DUI arrests compared with 755 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 571 major accidents so far this year compared with 554 during the same period last year.

Twenty-six fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year. By this time in 2021, 16 people had died.
