The 11th annual 5K Walk/Run for Literacy, held by the Friends of the Library — Waikoloa Region (FL-WR), returns Nov. 12 following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The walk/run will begin with check-in at 6:15 a.m. followed by the race starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Waikoloa School. Silent auction, book and tote sale, ohana table with wall-hanging and quilt and plant sale will be available from 8 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

The 5K Walk/Run for Literacy supports literacy and life-long learning programs such as Baby’s First Book with distribution at North Hawaii Community Hospital, e-readers donations to regional schools and sponsorship of the Big Island Heluhelu Quiz Bowl, an islandwide academic reading competition, held each spring.

The event is also the nonprofit’s main fundraiser of the year, and sponsorships are available to help the 501(c)(3) Friends of the Library — Waikoloa Region to continue and expand current programs and services, including the Bookmobile that’s open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. A sponsorship of $250 to $500 or more, will be recognized on the event commemorative T-shirt and listed on the race website at runforliteracy.org.
