Nephi’s Smokehouse held its inaugural hunting tournament Saturday with teams showing off their skills and keeping the tradition of hunting alive in Hawaii.
Dozens of teams signed up for the tournament to legally hunt feral pigs, or pua‘a, with winners — including their canine members — receiving an array of prizes for bringing in the largest boar, laho‘ole or sow, measuring the longest tusk, the biggest pig (overall) and having the largest total combined weight.
Weigh-in took place from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Puuanahulu Community Association’s community recreation center. While waiting for hunters to return with their catch, families were treated to lunch and dinner, raffles, live music and fun for the keiki.
