Derick Macanas
Derick Kembo Macanas, 58, of Pepeekeo, died Aug. 15, 2022 at his residence. Born Nov. 11, 1963, in Honolulu, he was an insurance adjuster for John Mullen &Company, Inc. and a hunter and gatherer.
Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Oct. 8 at Dodo Mortuary chapel, Hilo; memorial service at 10 a.m. Casual attire.
He is survived by companion, Tanya Bannister of Pepeekeo; son, Abelon Kai Macanas of Mountain View; hanai children, Shyla (David) Benevedes of South Carolina, Makamae (Matt Camp) Anderson of Waimea, Ka’imi Anderson of Laupahoehoe, Kale Anderson of Laupahoehoe, Chyane Pacheco of Kona and Chelsea Pacheco of Mountain View; hanai grandchildren, K.M. Camp of Waimea, Ikaia Carvalho of Waimea and La’anaia Carvalho of Waimea; brothers, Delbert (Alice) Macanas of Wahiawa, Oahu and Tyson (Kuualoha) Macanas of Hakalau; sisters, Sherry (Craig Tabata) Macanas of Hilo and Tiare Macanas of Puna; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marlu West
Marlu West, 76, of Pahoa, died Sept. 17, 2022, at her residence. Born Nov. 27, 1945, she founded Save The Sea Turtles International.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
She is survived by her sons, Ty Abusaid of Mexico, JC Abusaid of California, and Juan Oliphant of Oahu; and four grandchildren.

David Nielson
David Thomas Nielson, 67, of Hilo, died Sept. 15, 2022, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was retired from Pahoa Public Library.
Private services were held.
He is survived by brothers, James (Jeanette) Nielson of Waipahu, Oahu, Terry (Terilynn) Nielson of Hilo; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Rosie Manner
Rosie Leimomi (McCool Brede) Manner, 75, of Keaau, died Sept. 1, 2022. Born Sept. 29, 1946 in Honolulu, she retired as a sales clerk with Ali’i Petroleum.
She is survived by son, Tenny Manner Jr. of Keaau; daughters, Theolinda Mauga of Hilo, Tennilynn Jackson of Keaau; sister, Helen Liu of Maui; in addition to numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins and many hanai family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held October 8, 2022 from 11am-4pm at the Onekahakaha Beach Park in Hilo.

Kevin Kiyonaga
Kevin Keo Kiyonaga, 60, of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, died September 17, 2022 at Kona Community Hospital. Born Nov. 6, 1961, in Wailuku, Maui, he was a certified auto body technician at Kraftsman Auto Body, banquet porter at the former Keauhou Beach Hotel.
A “Car Run” will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 22 at Kona Palisades Pavilion. A celebration will follow at 1 p.m. at the pavilion.
He is survived by companion, Jeanie Mack-McAfee of Kailua-Kona; sons, Keo Matsumoto of Pearl City, Oahu and Kyle Kiyonaga of Beaverton, Oregon; stepson, Ian (Kristie) McAfee of Humble, Texas; daughters, Alicia Matsumoto of Pearl City, Oahu, and Ashley (Micah) Naehu and Megan Kiyonaga, all of Kailua-Kona; stepdaughter, Kristin (Brandon) Gunter of Reno, Nevada; mother, Marian Dias of Kailua-Kona; father, Albert Kiyonaga of Lahaina, Maui; brother, Steven (Lori) Kiyonaga of Hilo; sisters, Renee Kiyonaga-Moyer of Wailuku, Maui and Pohai Dias of Kihei, Maui; and eight grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

James “Jim” Robert Simpson, 84, of Waiohinu, died Oct. 3, 2022 in Kailua-Kona. Born Oct. 23, 1937, in Niagara Falls, New York, he worked as a college football coach and middle school teacher.

He is survived by wife Martha; sons Kalani (Jen) Simpson of Omaha, Nebraska; Kaipo (Nerisa) Simpson of Aiea, Oahu; sisters Judith Hatalak of Georgia; Kathern Rubino of Niagara Falls, New York; and five grandchildren.
