After a two-year COVID hiatus, The Rocky Horror Show returns to Kona for a limited engagement with all of your favorite kinky and raunchy characters along with songs, the cult favorite is known for.
A humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through to the early ‘60s, the musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite alien scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. There they encounter a host of interesting characters, awaken their sexuality and witness the unveiling of Frank’s new creation, an artificially made, fully grown, physically perfect muscle man named Rocky, complete “with blond hair and a tan.”
The original Richard O’Brien play premiered in London in 1973 followed by the 1975 film starring Tim Curry. Still in limited release over four decades after its premiere, the cult classic is the longest-running theatrical release in film history. Dedicated followers still flock midnight showings that pop up around the country for a film they have seen scores of times.
If you are a frequent visitor to the land of Transexual Transylvania and dedicated fan, you know the appropriate response to key phrases in the play and are encouraged to participate in the fun.
Stephen Alves takes the lead in the Aloha Performing Arts Company production as transvestite Dr. Frank with Miles Gerlach as his creation Rocky; Xavier Chung and Amelia Thorn as the innocent young couple Brad and Janice; Amo Gulinello as the creepy butler Riff-Raff; his sister Magenta portrayed by Chamika Fujioka and Roxanne Fox as lovelorn Columbia.
Rounding out the cast is John Paszalek as the doomed delivery boy Eddie, T.C. Faith as the narrator who takes you through the odd journey, Joel Michaelson as the UFO scientist Dr. Scott, and Dakota Rivera, Lindsay Roth, Taylor Deskin, Maya Krauss, and Bill Chemnick as Dr. Frank’s minion phantoms.
The APAC production, directed by Justine Smith with musical direction by Paul Kay has a limited Halloween run with shows scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 28-31.
