Three Coffee With A Cop events this month

Hawaii Police DepartmentArea II Community Policing Officers invite the public to three Coffee With A Cop events in Kona this month.

Coffee With A Cop events will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Kona Haven Coffee Co. at Coconut Grove Marketplace; Friday, Jan. 20, at Kona Mountain Coffee Co. on Hulikoa Drive in Kailua-Kona; Friday, Jan. 27, at Kona Coffee and Tea on Palani Road in Kailua-Kona.

These informal events are a way to get to know local police officers. There is no agenda and topics of conversation can range from sharing personal stories to discussing neighborhood issues.

Japanese civic association offers scholarships

The Kona Japanese Civic Association will award two $1,500 scholarships to high school seniors in West Hawaii with financial needs who will be attending an accredited two- or four-year college or university.

Home-schooled seniors and students of any ethnic background are invited to apply.

The applicants will be judged on a 600-word essay based on their awareness of and how the Japanese culture influenced them, as well as financial need, academic achievement, involvement in extracurricular high school activities and volunteer with community organizations.

Application must be postmarked by March 20, 2023, and are available from high school counselors or online at www.konajapanesecivicassociation.org or on the group’s Facebook Page.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes return

Powerful Tools for Caregivers (PTC) classes are once again available in Kona.

A group of six to 10 caregivers will meet on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon starting Jan. 17 and continuing through Feb. 21 at the Regency Hualalai, 75-181 Hualalai Road, in Kailua-Kona. The six-week series costs $10. Call Judy Bell at (808) 937-2163 to register or ask questions. Advance registration is required.
