West Hawaii County Band performs Sunday

The West Hawaii County Band presents a free concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hale Halawai in Kailua Village.

The 20 members of the band will present an hour of free band music in its monthly Free Concert Series. The selections will include music made famous by the likes of Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra as well as a real, honest-to-goodness circus march by K.L King and a more traditional march by J.P. Sousa. The band will also honor the Hawaiian tradition with tunes arranged by Bud Dant including “Beautiful Kahana” and “Big Island Anthem.”

As always, the band will set up chairs for the audience, but please note that many of these chairs are not in their prime. Consider bringing along your favorite beach/camp chair for maximum comfort while enjoying the music.

The West Hawaii County Band will be led by guest director Richard Shields.

The band’s next free concert is slated Feb. 26 at Hale Halawai.

‘An Evening of Klezmer Joy’ coming to Kona

“An Evening of Klezmer Joy,” featuring Rebecca Roudman and Jason Eckl, founding members of the San Francisco Yiddish Combo (SFYC), classically-trained musicians who came together through a love of Klezmer music, will perform Feb. 8 in Kailua-Kona.

Their fresh spin on this traditional genre blends years of experience in the classical, folk, jazz and even hip-hop worlds to create a “Klezmer for the 21st century.” Fronted by virtuoso cellist Roudman and Eckl on guitar, the SFYC has entertained audiences from their Northern California home base, across the U.S. to Europe and Asia. Roudman’s dynamic and fiery playing has taken her from symphony orchestras to her jazz-rock-blues-fusion group “Dirty Cello,” which will be performing at Volcano Arts Center during this Hawaii visit.

The “Evening of Klezmer Joy,” presented by Congregation Kona Beth Shalom, will get underway at 6:30 p.m. at Kona Educational Center at Sadie Seymour Botanical Gardens (formerly Kona Outdoor Circle), 76-6280 Kuakini Highway.

Seating is limited, so RSVP is a must. Admission is free; a suggested $18 donation is welcome. Refreshments will be available during intermission. For samples of their music and to RSVP for seats go to konabethshalom.org and click the pull-down menu for “Events.”
