Zonta Club of Hilo Announces Open Applications for 2023 Awards &Scholarships

“Zonta is pleased to offer a total of $15,000 in cash assistance on Hawaii Island in 2023,” said Nina Buchanan, Zonta Club of Hilo Scholarship Chair. “We encourage women to apply for financial support for brighter futures in their chosen fields, and look forward to reading applications from a diverse pool of applicants.”

The Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Awards encourage more young women to participate in public affairs by recognizing a commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements, and a dedication to empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. Open to women aged 16-19 (as of April 1). Deadline is March 1.

The Women’s Nursing Degree Scholarships are for women who demonstrate interest in continuing their nursing studies toward an advanced degree or leadership track. Open to women of any age, students must be currently enrolled full-time in the first year of a nursing degree program at UHH or HCC with an above-average record in scholastic standing (3.0 or better GPA) and who show a financial need. Deadline is May 1.

The Barbra An Pleadwell Scholarships are for female Hawaii Island or Oahu residents who are currently enrolled as full-time students in college/university or high school seniors. Preference is given to Women’s Studies and/or Communications majors who demonstrate financial need. 2022 was the first year this scholarship is offered, thanks to donations made in memory of Pleadwell. Deadline is May 1.

The Jane M. Klausman (JMK) Women in Business Scholarships are awarded to women undertaking business studies who demonstrate outstanding potential in the field. Open to women of any age, students must be enrolled in at least the second year of an undergraduate program through the final year of a master’s program at the time the application is submitted. Deadline is May 15.

The Women in STEM Scholarships are awarded to women pursuing a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) degree program who demonstrate outstanding potential in the field. Open to women of any age, students must be enrolled at an accredited university/college/institute in at least the second year of an undergraduate program through the final year of a master’s program at the time the application is submitted. Deadline is May 15.

Top winners of the YWPA Award, JMK Scholarship, and STEM Scholarship will be advanced from the club level to compete for additional awards and scholarships at the district and international levels of Zonta.

Free tax help offered

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, an AARP Foundation program helps low to moderate income taxpayers have more discretionary income for everyday essentials, such as food and housing, by assisting with tax services and ensuring they receive applicable tax credits and deductions. AARP Tax-Aide is available free to taxpayers with low and moderate income, with special attention to those 50 and older.

West Hawaii has three sites offering service beginning Feb. 1 and continuing through April 13.

• Hale Halawai located at 75-5600 Alii Drive is open on a walk-in basis 8 a.m. to noon Thursdays beginning Feb. 2.

• Yano Hall located at 82-6156 Mamalahoa Hwy in Captain Cook is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays starting Feb. 1 for both walk-in and appointments, which can be made by calling (808) 765-9141.

• Waimea Community Center located at 65-1260 Kawaihae Road in Waimea is open 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays starting Feb. 3 for both walk-ins and appointments, which can be made by calling (808) 388-6645.

Kona Orchid Society meets Feb. 3

The Kona Orchid Society meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 3 at Makua Lani Christian Academy.

The speaker will be Roy Tokunaga, from H&R Nurseries, in Honolulu, on “Growing Orchids in Hawaii.” Tokunaga’s presentation will be his final to the society because he is retiring.

Attendees are encouraged to bring In flowering plants for “Show and Tell.” There will also be a drawing for plants.

VFW Kona Post announces February meals, meetings

The VFW Kona Post hosts an array of meals and meetings for veterans and friends during February at its location on Kaiwi Street in Kailua-Kona.

On Mondays, the Post offers hamburgers/cheeseburgers with chips for $8. On Tuesdays, in celebration of Taco Tuesday, the Post offers three chicken, ground beef, or pork on hard or soft tortillas with Rice and beans for $12. Friday night dinners are also $12 with Muriel’s chicken Marsala, salad, bread, and dessert on February 3rd. Jane and Shane’s Shoyu chicken, rice, roll, and dessert on February 10th. Commander’s dinner of Chicken and dumplings, salad, and dessert on Feb. 17. Jeanie and Rod’s Spagetti, garlic bread, and dessert on Feb. 24. All meals are open to the public and are served between 4 to 6 p.m. On Sundays, the Post will hosts its Sunday Brunch at 11 a.m. for $8.

The Post will hold its monthly meetings at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 11. The following Saturday, Feb. 18, the VFW Auxiliary holds its monthly meeting at 10:30 a.m.
