Aikido club offers free instruction
Aiki Kai o Kona Aikido Club offers free aikido instruction for ages 6 years and up at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona.
With 34 years of teaching experience, and established ongoing children and adult aikido classes, this is a great opportunity to learn a traditional martial art. Aikido offers discipline, stress relief, stretching, as well as a great non-competitive martial art.

Housing survey underway
The Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation (HHFDC) is urging Hawaii residents to respond to a major survey that is needed to assess issues relating to housing supply and demand throughout the state.
The survey is being conducted by SMS Research and Marketing, Inc. as part of the 2023 Hawaii Housing Planning Study, and public participation is critical to accurately understand the needs of the state’s many localities and diverse populations.
“A request to participate in the survey may come by way of email or telephone,” said Tim Carson, president and CEO of SMS. Surveying is underway and expected to continue through May. Carson understands that those who are contacted may be concerned about a possible scam and stated, “At no time will anyone connected to the SMS housing survey ask for personally identifiable information.”

HVNP announces February flight operations
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park announces the following flight operations for the month of February:
• Feb. 2 between 7 and 8 a.m. for Hawaiian petrel monitoring on Mauna Loa between 4,000 and 9,000 feet in elevation.
• Feb. 3 between 8 and 11 a.m. to map rapid ohia death in east Kahuku paddocks between 2,300 and 5,300 feet in elevation.
• Feb. 6 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for transporting native plants and water to support dry forest restoration efforts in lower Kahuku at the 2,500-foot elevation.
• Feb. 16 between 9 and 10:30 a.m. to sling load camp gear between the Olaa Koa unit and the agricultural station at the 3,500 to 4,000 feet in elevation.
In addition, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct additional flight operations over Kilauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation.
Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.
