Hawaii Police Department officers arrested 19 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Jan. 30 and Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested nine drivers while Puna officers arrested five, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. South Hilo and South Kohala officers arrested two drivers in each district while North Kohala officers nabbed one.

So far this year, there have been 114 DUI arrests compared with 101 during the same period last year, according to police.

There have been 96 major accidents so far this year compared with 82 during the same period last year.

Five fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year. By this time in 2022, seven people had died.
