Reef Talks return

Guest Speaker Keller Laros with Manta Pacific Research Foundation will lead the discussion during a Reef Talk Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Kailua-Kona.

Laros will present “Manta Rays of Kona Hawaii” from 5 to 7 p.m. at the West Hawaii Civic Center, Building G.

Reef Talks are a free monthly lecture series on marine and coastal topics, bringing experts from around the state to speak to the West Hawaii community. They are presented by nonprofit Malama Kai Foundation.

Grow Hawaiian Festival is Feb. 25

The Grow Hawaiian Festival is coming back to Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden.

From 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 25, the public is invited to join artists, farmers, botanists, entomologists, plant lovers, and Hawaiian cultural practitioners at this unique celebration of plants and Hawaiian culture in Captain Cook.

Many Hawaian cultural practioners will be on hand to show their skills and talk with visitors about lauhala weaving, kapa making, poi pounding, carving, lei making, and many other activities rooted in the native plants and Hawaiian crops that grow in the Garden. Botanists will be at the event to identify plants, and community groups will have booths. There will be a program of speakers, including Manuel Rego presenting his success stories in growing taro in containers.

Gardeners can buy rare and attractive native plants from the Amy Greenwell Nursery. There will be a Hawaiian Arts Market in the visitor center with puzzles, jewelry, art and books by local artists. Bruddah Kalima will provide music at the event,and food will be available for sale from Kona Grill House.

The event is free, and parking will be available at the lower lot of Kealakekua Ranch Center, below Choice Mart, with a shuttle to the Garden provided by Hawaii Forest and Trail.

The garden is located 12 miles south of Kailua-Kona on Highway 11. The event is sponsored by ChoiceMART and Hawaii Forest and Trail.
