Jeffrey Takamine

Jeffrey Yoshio Takamine, 68, of Hilo, died Jan. 16, 2023 at his residence. Born in Honokaa on June 7, 1954, he was the proprietor and president of Big Island Delights in Hilo. Visitation will be held on March 5 at Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Sangha Hall (398 Kilauea Avenue) from 1:30 to 4 p.m.; memorial service will begin at 4 p.m. He is survived by sons, Craig (Audrey) Takamine of Hilo, Dean (Nicole) Takamine of Hilo and Aaron (Alice) Takamine of Hilo; daughters, Cheryl (Guy) Ho of Hilo and Christin (Preston Sato) Takamine of Hilo; brothers, Ronald Haimoto of Honolulu and Blane (Dale) Takamine of Enumclaw, Washington; sister, Nadine (Kenneth) Bondallian of Honokaa; nine grandchildren; numerous uncles, aunties, nephews, nieces and cousins. Carla Takamine

Carla Kayoko Takamine, 68, of Hilo, , died Jan. 16, 2023 at her residence. Born in Hilo on Aug. 17, 1954, she was the proprietor and vice president of Big Island Delights in Hilo. James Bartlett

James “Jamie” Elliott Bartlett, 72, of Paukaa, died Dec. 7, 2022 at his residence.Born in Long Beach, California, he was the owner of J.B. Gutter &Roofing Services, and a surfer, fisherman, mechanic and avid golfer. Private burial of his cremated remains will take place at a later date at Alae Cemetery in Hilo. He is survived by brothers, Jonathan Bartlett of Lake Elsinore, California and Jeffrey (Martyne) Bartlett of San Clemente, California; sister, Amy (Steven) Markham of Hilo; numerous nephews, nieces and family and friends. James Makuakane Sr.

James “Maku” Vernal Makuakane Sr., 72, of Pahoa, died Jan. 17, 2023 at home. Born Sept. 4, 1950 in Puna, he was a retired truck driver for Sanford’s Service Center, a former truck driver for Amfac and U.S. Army Vietnam veteran. Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Feb. 24 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel, Hilo; funeral service at 10 a.m.; cremation to follow. Casual attire. He is survived by, son, James (Irene) Makuakane Jr. of Hilo; daughters, Malia Lewis of Mountain View and Mailelani (Charles Jacob) Quihano of Mountain View; hanai daughter, Mika (Jack) Tamaki-Evans of Hawaiian Beaches; brother, David (Sherlean) Makuakane of Ainaloa; sisters, Faith Yanagihara of Aiea, Oahu, Lani Makuakane-Waiau of Kalapana and Darnell Makuakane of Kalapana; 12 grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Clifford Freitas

Clifford Wayne Freitas, 71, of Honolulu, died Nov. 10, 2022. He was born on May 8, 1951 in Ka‘u. Celebration of Life service will be held on March 4 at Mililani Mortuary Mauka Chapel. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m., and service at 10:30 a.m. He is survived by wife, Loretta Enos Arruda; son, Bryson (Ui) Freitas of Kaneohe, Oahu; daughter, Melodie (Richard) Agbayani of Pepeekeo; step-son Wayne Arruda; step daughters, Sherriann Arruda, Claudette Arruda, and Caprice Arruda; brother, Roy Freitas of Makawao, Maui; sisters, Rose Marie (Leonard) Angay of Kona, Blanche (Steven) Angay of Mountain View, and Bernadette Kawailima of Keaukaha; four grandchildren; and numerous step grandchildren.

Jean Hatada

Jean Matsue Hatada, 95, of Hilo died Feb. 5, 2023, at a private care home. Born in Honokaa, she was a retired land agent for HELCO, formerly employed at Security Title, a former Real Estate Broker and member of New Hope Hilo. Private services held. Family requests no flowers and no koden (monetary Gifts). She is survived by sons, Russell (Birong Zhang) Hatada of Hilo, Brian (Lynn) Hatada of Hilo; daughter, Cheryl Mae (David) Ferreira of Hilo; brothers-in-law, Kengo Hatada of Hilo, George (Lorraine) Hatada of California; sister-in-law, Tokiko Hatada of Hilo; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Elinor Wolff

Elinor Margaret Wolff, 101, of Keaau, died Feb. 12, 2023. Born Feb. 14, 1922 in Illinois, she retired from Pahoa School as a counsellor and was a member of the Baha’i Faith, United Nations, American Association of University Women, and Retired Teachers Association. A Baha’i burial service will be held 11 a.m. Feb. 28 at Alae Cemetery. Celebration of life to follow from 1 to 5 p.m. at Onekahakaha Beach Park, Pavilions 2 &3. She is survived by sons, William (Cinder) Wolff of New Harmony, Utah; Thomas (Teta Teikitekahioho) Wolff of Kea’au; Scott (Jean Jaklevick) Wolff of Kea’au; sister, Lois McCoy of Farmington, IL; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. John Souza

John Paul Souza, 69, of Captain Cook, died Feb. 10, 2023 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Honolulu on Feb. 20, 1953, he was an iron worker for Associated Steel Company and a member of Iron Workers Union Local 625. He is survived by wife, Penelope Souza of Captain Cook; daughters, Katie Souza of Captain Cook, and Lilah Souza of Kenmore, WA.; and grandson Landen Ewaliko-Souza. Reginald Elvenia

Reginald “Reggie” Elvenia, 72, of Hilo, died Jan. 17, 2023, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he retired from Aloha Airlines and Aloha Air Cargo as a senior agent, and member of Aloha Airlines Golf Club. Friends may call at 9 a.m. March 4 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 10 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn.
