Maile B. Melrose, 71, of Kealakekua, Hawaii died January 18, 2023 at her home in Kealakekua. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 7, 1951, she was a mother, wife, historian for Kona Historical Society and founding president of the Friends of Amy Greenwell Garden. A celebration of life will be held at 5:30 p.m. July 29, 2023 at her home in Kealakekua, Hawaii. Aloha attire. In lieu of flowers, donations on her behalf to Friends of Amy Greenwell Garden, Kona Historical Society or Hospice of Kona. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Melrose of Kealakekua; daughter, Lilinoe (Randy) Wagner of Brussels, WI.; sons, James Melrose of Denver, CO. and Jesse (Andrea) Melrose of San Diego, CA.; father, James (Elaine) Mitchell of Kealakekua; sisters, Megan Mitchell of Kealakekua and Amanda (George) Barnes of Faversham, England; brothers, Nickolas (Bonnie) Mitchell of Honalo and John Mitchell of Kealakekua; 5 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. John Paul Souza, 69, of Captain Cook, Kona Hawaii died February 10, 2023 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 20, 1953, he was an iron worker for Associated Steel Company and a member of Iron Workers Union Local 625. His true passions were his line of work and his love for the ocean and his family. He is survived by his wife, Penelope H. Souza of Captain Cook Kona HI.; daughters, Katie K Souza of Captain Cook Kona HI., and Lilah L. Souza of Kenmore, WA.; grandson, Landen K. Ewaliko-Souza Private services will be held at a later date. Raymond Masami Ohara, 86, of Hilo died Feb. 14 at his residence. Born in Honolulu, he was the owner of Big Island Paving Company, Inc., mechanic at Norona, Inc., foreman for McCabe Paving Company, Inc., lead man for Jorgensen Steel, employed at Haitsuka Brothers, attended HIAC, member of Hawaii Island Contractors’ Association, Local Union 3, Hilo Trollers, Hilo Macadamia Nut Association, St. Joseph Catholic Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps and the Hawaii Air National Guard. Private services held. Survived by wife, Caroline P. McCabe Ohara; children, Raenelle (Michael), Rena, Ronda (Harlan); sister, Doris Ching; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Ohara, Irma, Darnell, Delia, Hanako, Lynn, Diane; brothers-in-law, Stanley (Blanche), Chris; three grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and hanai family. Rugene Tadena Sambrano, 62, of Kamuela, died on Friday, February 17, 2023 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. She was born on November 15, 1960 in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. She was a former crew trainer for McDonald’s in Waimea. Visitation will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday (Mar. 16, 2023) at Annunciation Catholic Church, Waimea; Funeral Mass at 6:30 p.m. Additional services will be held in the Philippines. Georgiana Caravalho
Georgiana Leinaala Caravalho, 76, of Riverside, California and formerly of North Kohala died Feb. 18 at the Riverside Community Hospital in California. Born on Oahu, she was a retired teacher and Vice Principal for the State of Hawaii Department of Education at Waimea Elementary, Keonepoko Elementary and Kohala Elementary Schools, former Volunteer Fire Chief for the North Kohala Volunteer Firefighters and a graduate of Roosevelt High School on Oahu. Private scattering of ashes to be held at a later date. Survived by daughters, Leina’ala (Dan) Koshiyama of Hilo; Virginia (Senobio) Aguilera of Riverside, California; son, Daniel (Leanne) Caravalho of Waikoloa; sister, Charlotte Schnieders of Florida; brother George (Inez) Butterfield Jr. of Nevada; brother-in-law, Earl “Kenneth” Caravalho of Hilo; four grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. James “Jim” Glenn Frye, 76, of Ocean View, died on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at Hilo Medical Center. He was born on July 2, 1946 in Camden, Maine. He was a retired hairdresser, an artist, and a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran. He was a member of St. Jude’s Episcopal Church in Ocean View. No services. Walter Takeshi Hanato, 79, of Honalo, Hawaii died March 5, 2023 at Kona Community Hospital. Born September 24, 1943 in Kealakekua, Hawaii, he was a groundskeeper at King Kamehameha Hotel and a bartender at Teshima’s Restaurant. He is survived by his sons, Darcy Hanato and Kenneth Hanato, both of Honalo, Daniel Hanato of Kealakekua; brother, Melvin (Jane) Hanato of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Nancy (Herbert) Go of Honalo and Girle (Jackie) Puhi of Capt.
