Cargo van stolen from Salvation Army Hilo Temple Corps
A cargo van that supports social service outreach for The Salvation Army Hilo Temple Corps was stolen Tuesday from the Corps parking lot, located at 219 Ponohawai Street in Hilo It is a white, 2006 Ford E-350 extended cargo van. A police report was filed with Hawaii Police Department.
“Not having our van creates logistical challenges for all of our outreach programs,” said Capt. Sam LeMar, Hawaii County Coordinator and Corps Officer for The Salvation Army Hilo Temple Corps. “We use this van for food pick ups to support our food pantry and homeless feeding and different thrift store duties.”

Another one of Gov. Green’s nominees rejected
A state Senate committee on Thursday rejected Gov. Josh Green’s nominee to lead the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.
The Senate committee on Energy, Economic Development and Tourism voted to recommend that the full Senate not approve the nomination of Chris Sadayasu.
Sadayasu was born and raised on Hawaii Island and is a graduate of Hilo High School.
The hearing included testimony from Green, Chief Housing Officer Nani Medeiros, and numerous state agencies.
The vote was 4-1, with Sens. Lynn DeCoite, Glenn Wakai, Donna Mercado Kim and Kurt Fevella voting against Sadayasu.
Sen. Carol Fukunaga was the lone vote in opposition of the recommendation.
“Although I believe Chris is a decent person, his performances during several Senate committee hearings have left me with doubts about his ability to effectively lead this department,” said DeCoite, chair of the EET committee. “Due to the lack of confidence I felt in his potential to effectively manage and collaborate with the agencies that would fall under his direction, I could not support or recommend that we move forward with this nomination.”
Despite the committee’s recommendation, Sadayasu’s nomination will move forward for final consideration by the full 25-member Senate.
Sadayasu was the second of Green’s nominees to be rejected by a Senate committee.
Former Honolulu City Councilman Ikaika Anderson withdrew his nomination to lead the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands in February after the committee on Hawaiian Affairs voted not to recommend him to the full Senate.
Police seeking missing South Kona man
Hawaii Island police are requesting the public’s assistance in locating 59-year-old Jeffrey Clarkson who was reported missing. He has a medical condition that requires medication.
Clarkson was last seen at his residence in the 84-6100 block of D Road in Captain Cook, on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at 11 p.m., wearing a dark v-neck colored t-shirt, blue denim jeans, and blue Croc shoes.
Clarkson is described as being 5 feet 9 inches tall, 215 to 220 pounds, with short black and white hair, a short grey beard, and brown eyes.
Police are asking that anyone with information regarding Clarkson’s whereabouts to contact the police department non-emergency number at (808) 935-3311 or lead investigator Officer Kaneala Abaya at (808) 326-4646 ext. 253.
