A Hilo Grand Jury on Wednesday indicted an Ocean View man on eight counts related to an attempted murder and subsequent manhunt.

Ronald Kahihikolo, 44, of Ocean View, is charged with second-degree attempted murder and domestic abuse for allegedly shooting his 42-year-old girlfriend in the head during a dispute March 6 in their home.

In addition, the indictment charges Kahihikolo with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, two counts of resisting an order to stop, theft, first-degree theft, two counts of ownership of a weapon prohibited by a felon, two counts of firearms penalty and carrying a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The indictment states Kahihikolo was driving a Dodge Charger stolen from Hertz Rental Car and refused an order to stop by police, leading them on a pursuit from Kona to Hamakua, reaching speeds upward of 80 mph.

In 2021, Kahihikolo pleaded guilty to a felony charge of second-degree forgery. With that plea, 13 related charges were dropped and he was granted supervised release in July. Later that month he did not show up for court and there was a revocation for his supervised release and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The Charger was found Friday on a side road in lower Kalopa off Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 19) in Hamakua.

A manhunt ensued in the area of the 39-mile marker of Hawaii Belt Road. It resulted in Kahihikolo being taken into custody shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday.

Circuit Court Judge Wendy DeWeese maintained bail at $196,000, although prosecutors have made a motion to hold Kahihikolo without bail.
