Kahilu summer camps are a great way to introduce your keiki to the arts, or nurture an already developing interest. Camps are fun, affordable, and offer opportunities to learn and discover new skills at the same time. Space is limited*, so sign up early to be sure you get a spot! Some scholarships are available to qualified families.
Three camps are provided this year; Aerial Dance presented by Prince Dance is the first of the three and begins June 27. This aerial dance camp will explore the wonderful world of dancing in the air. Over the course of the week we will delve into aerial silks, trapeze, lyra, and also get grounded, stronger, and more flexible with classes in ballet, acrobatics, yoga, and pilates. Each day will include a group warm up, technique classes, choreography, and improvisation. Beginners and intermediate aerialists welcome! There will be a final performance on the last day of camp.
Kahilu Performing Arts Workshop, the second camp of the summer will begin July 17. KPAW is a two-week summer musical theater performing arts camp. Founded in 2011, KPAW introduces youth to dynamic aspects of the performing arts. Students play acting games that involve physical awareness, improvisation, and communication. They rehearse musical numbers daily, learning songs and dances, along with a script co-written by teachers and campers. Campers participate in daily electives of their choice, including songwriting, playwriting, dance, improv, art, and more. At the end of the two weeks, campers perform a show for their ‘ohanas. All the KPAW teachers are theatre professionals from Hawai‘i Island, assisted by local high school and college students pursuing a theatre education. There will be a final performance on the last afternoon of the workshop.
The final camp of the summer, Kapena School of Music will begin July 31. Beginner to intermediate levels are welcome to join in the fun for a one week music camp where we’ll teach ‘ukulele, voice, and intro to music theory. We will also be incorporating the importance of music-making, language, the arts, and Hawaiian culture. This week-long music camp will wrap up in true Waimea fashion with a ho‘ike performance at Kahilu Theatre for family and friends to enjoy and share in the celebration of everything these keiki have learned.
