Matsue Fujimoto

Matsue U. ”Honey” Fujimoto, 92, of Bothell, Wash. and formerly of Hilo died Nov. 3, 2022 at home. She was born in Hilo and was a retired teacher with the State of Hawaii, Department of Education. Visitation 10-11 a.m. Saturday, June 17 at the Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Urn committal service 12 noon Monday, June 19 at the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery #2 Pavilion. Casual attire; no flowers or koden (monetary donations). Survived by son, Darrel Fujimoto of Washington; daughter, Beth (John Drotz) Fujimoto of Washington; brother, Edward Uratani of Hawaii; sister, Elaine Logan of California; four grandchildren. Asako Tanaka

Asako Egusa Tanaka, 90, of Hilo, died April 16, 2023, at a care home in Hilo. Born in Papaaloa, she was a retired secretary for the University of Hawaii at Hilo and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin. Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers. He is survived by son, Gareth (Eun Sung) Tanaka of Ewa Beach, Oahu; numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Randy Crowell

Randy Jon Crowell, 70, of Holualoa, Hawaii died April 22, 2023 at Hospice of Kona’s Nakamaru Hale. Born in Tacoma, Washington on May 25, 1952, He was a veteran of The Coast Guard. He was the manager for Certified Pest Control and also managed Hawaii Island Humane Society in Kona. He is survived by his wife, Deborah Crowell of Holualoa; sons, Jon Crowell of Hawaii Island, Jacob Crowell and daughter, Samantha and Jacob Hampton, all of Holualoa; 3 grandchilren; brother, Gerry (Dianne) Crowell of Arizona; Private services. Sachie Ohata

Sachie Ozaki Ohata, age 89, of Waimea passed away on May 2, 2023 at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo, Hawaii. Born in Wailuku, Maui, she was a retired teacher and member of the Church of the Holy Cross. She volunteered as a flower lady at the Lyman Museum and the North Hawaii Community Hospital. She is survived by her son, Mark (Jacquelyn) Ohata of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Dr. Ruth (Bert Saito) Ohata of Hilo; cousins, nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held on June 24, 2023 (Saturday) at the Church of the Holy Cross in Hilo, Hawaii from 10 to 11:00 a.m.; celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Good wishes only, please. Christopher DeMorales

Christopher M. DeMorales, 49, of Hilo, passed away on May 7, 2023. He was born on July 28, 1973 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Service will be held on Friday, June 23, 2023 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel, Hilo. Calvin Kaleiwahea

Calvin Hokulani Kaleiwahea, 78, of Volcano, passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2023 at his residence. Born on June 29, 1944 in Hawaii, he was Head Rancher for a ranch on the Big Island. He also was a member of the Royal Order of King Kamehameha. Richard Maiava

Richard “Ric” Neff Maiava, 75, of Hilo, passed away peacefully at his home on May 22, 2023. Born August 24, 1947 in Haar, Germany, Ric was General Manager of Ken’s House of Pancakes and Owner of Pond’s Hilo. He is survived by son, Jess Ric Maiava; Companion, Debra Ching Maiava; and sisters, Pammy, Sri, Michelle and their Families. Celebration of Life is pending. Arrangements by Ballard Family Mortuary.

Caleb Parazette

Caleb Morgan Parazette, 55, of Kailua Kona, Hawaii died May 23, 2023 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Santa Barbara, California, he was a screenwriter, with two short films produced. He was a massage therapist and worked at many world-class resorts and spas, most recently the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. Steve Fukunaga

Steve Hiroshi Fukunaga, age 62, of Hilo, Hawaii, passed away on May 28, 2023 in the Hilo Medical Center. He was born in Pahala, Hawaii on July 23, 1960 and was a Life Insurance Agent and Investment/Financial Advisor. He was a member of New Hope East Hawaii Church, Rotary Club of South Hilo, Chamber of Commerce, Aloha Exchange Club, and National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (N.A.I.F.A.). He was also a United States Air Force Veteran and coached numerous Basketball and Baseball teams in East Hawaii. Visitation will be held at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo, Hawaii on June 24, 2023 (Saturday) from 3 to 4:00 p.m.; memorial service will begin at 4 p.m. Casual attire is requested. He is survived by wife, Pauline Fukunaga of Hilo; sons, Ryan (Meghan Silva) Fukunaga of Hilo and Qaz Fukunaga of Hilo; daughter, Tracee (Kenny Xu) Fukunaga of California; brother, Chester (Adela) Fukunaga of Pahala; sister, Amy Johnson of Kansas City; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. William Castro

William Castro, Jr., 87, of Hilo died May 31 at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a baker at the Hilo Medical Center and the former Hilo Hospital, member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Private services held. Survived by companion, Paul Martines of Hilo; sisters, Patricia (George) Iranon of Honolulu, Joyce (Rufus) Sonognini of Hilo, Rachel (Frank) Toddre of Las Vegas, Nevada; numerous nieces and nephews.
