Aloha Theatre will present Lauren Gunderson’s Toil and Trouble on stage at the Aloha Theatrefor three weekends in August. Toil and Trouble is an unexpected, fantastical, and funny take on Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Underemployed friends Adam, Matt and Beth are desperate to beat the recession any way they can—like combining forces to take over a small island in South America. But when a fortune cookie tells Matt that he will rule and Beth gets a little too handy with a dagger, plans go awry. This hilarious adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth pits friend against friend, ambition against fate, pet-sitting against miniature vicuna mogul-dom. It is, in Gunderson’s words, “…basically, an uber-capitalist hipster Macbeth.”

This production is directed by Artistic Director, Sara Athans, with Tyra Iaela as Assistant Director. It features performances from Taylor Deskin as Beth, Miles Gerlach as Adam, and Jamie Hughes as Matt. Costumes by Lindsay Roth, set design by Tyra Iaela and Sara Athans, set building led by Hal Snyder, sound by Nu’u Crouch, and lights by Jeff Rowand.

This production is appropriate for ages 13+ and does include strong language, references to death, drugs, alcohol, and sexual situations. Fake blood is used onstage. The show is approximately 90 minutes long with no intermission. Toil and Trouble will run for 3 weekends from August 4 through August 20. Concessions, including beer and wine, will be available for purchase at the theatre. Tickets are available now at alohatheatre.com
