Kona Choral Society seeks tenors, basses

Kona Choral Society is seeking new tenor and bass singers. Kona Choral Society has around 100 members and performs a variety of music several times a year, including classical, Hawaiian, gospel and more, from masterworks to local traditions. More voices in the lower range, both female and male, are needed. No auditions are required.

KCS has two semesters every year, with rehearsals on Thursday evenings under the direction of Susan McCreary Duprey. Duprey has been conducting live choral groups and orchestras for more than 25 years, and was raised on Oahu in a home filled with music — both her parents were professional musicians. Duprey has sung professionally with renowned music teachers around the world, and got her master’s in music at Westminster Choir College. She also founded and conducts the Windward Choral Society on Oahu. She turns each rehearsal into an education in music. Members of KCS pay $125 tuition per semester, with tuition waivers available.

All interested tenor and bass singers are invited to a talk story with Duprey and some current members of KCS on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Kona United Methodist Church, 74-4960 Palani Road. Pupus will be served.

There will also be an open house and talk story for all interested in singing with Kona Choral Society at the first meeting for the fall semester on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Kona United Methodist Church.

The fall semester will culminate in the performance of the “Messiah,” with Hawaiian choral music and other works, at the Outrigger Keauhou Hotel. There will also be free holiday concerts around the beginning of December.

Amy Hanaiali‘i to perform Saturday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea

Kahilu Theatre will kick off the 2023-24 season with Amy Hanaiali‘i performing live at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 9) in Waimea.

Amy will pay tribute to her award-winning song “Palehua,” one of Hawaii’s most famous songs, danced to at hula halau across the globe.

Palehua, a beautiful mountain on Oahu, inspired creative magic when Hanaiali‘i and the late Uncle Willie K united their talents there 25 years ago to compose some of Hawaii’s most beloved songs. “Palehua” was written in tribute to this place, and Honolulu Magazine named it one of the “best 50 songs ever written.”

To celebrate the 25-year milestone, Amy and Kumu Micah Kamohoali‘i have written a new verse for the song. Amy has also recorded this new verse in two additional languages, Japanese and French.

Join Amy Hanaiali‘i and her band to celebrate 25 years of “Palehua.”

Tickets range in price from $35 to $65, and can be purchased at KahiluTheatre.org. Kahilu Theatre is located at 67-1186 Lindsey Road, Waimea.
