Transfer station and landfill closed for Ironman

The Kealakehe Recycling and Transfer Station, Reuse Center, and HI-5 Redemption and West Hawaii Sanitary Landfill (Pu‘uanahulu) will be closed on Ironman day, Saturday, Oct. 14 due to road closures.

All other facilities are operating on a regular schedule.

The closure at the Kealakehe Recycling and Transfer Station will affect all services, including residential trash disposal, HI-5 redemption, 2-bin recycling, green waste recycling, the Re-Use Store and mulch pick-up.

Regular operations and services will resume on Sunday at the Kealakehe Recycling and Transfer Station and Monday at the West Hawaii Sanitary Landfill.

Taste of the Philippines: A celebration of Filipino culture, couture and cuisine takes place Oct. 21

Tickets are now on sale for the inaugural Taste of the Philippines, a benefit event for the Kona Visayan Club.

The evening soirée will showcase the culture, fashion and food of the Philippines, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Resort.

Guests will have an opportunity to indulge in Filipino-inspired dishes whipped up by eight of the island’s top chefs. There will also be a runway show featuring custom couture inspired by modern and traditional Filipino attire from designer Iris Viacrusis.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce to help families affected by recent wildfires. This is event is hosted also to raise funds for educational, social, and economic advancements for Filipinos in Hawaii through scholarships and additional resources.
