KAILUA KONA — Aside from the traditional Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) football teams, a new squad has become the talk of the town.

Kona’s own 11-under Pop Warner team, the West Side Eagles, have been on a tear all season — going 8-0 in the regular season and winning their first playoff game this past weekend against Hilo by a score of 36-0. Playoffs included, the west-side squad has scored 316 total points and allowed just 20 in 2023. These numbers have surpassed 14-under, 11-under and 8-under teams across the island.

This coming Sunday at Kealakehe, the Eagles will have their toughest test yet against the Waimea Cowboys. The winner of the matchup will qualify for the National Pop Warner Super Bowl Championship on Dec. 1-9 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

Anyone interested in supporting the Eagles in their quest for island glory is welcome to attend. Admission is $8; concessions will also be available. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
