Irish, Indian culture to be celebrated at International Education Week at Hawai‘i Community College in Hilo

The Hawai‘i Community College International Education Committee is celebrating International Education Week 2023 with events at the Manono campus in Hilo that are free and open to the public.

“Irish Night” on Wednesday, Nov. 15 is an opportunity to celebrate Irish culture through film and a performance by the dance troupe Hawai‘i Irish Dance.

The evening will begin at 4:15 pm with an introduction from Dublin with Niamh Hamill of Study Ireland at Papa‘a Hale (Bldg. 380) on the Manono campus, immediately followed by the screening of “The Quiet Girl” (an Cailín Ciúin), a film noteworthy for being the first Irish (Gaelic) language film to receive an Academy Award nomination. At 6:10 p.m., attendees can view “An Irish Goodbye,” an Academy Award winner for best short film. The evening will culminate at 6:30 p.m. with a spectacular Irish dance performance presented by Hawai‘i Irish Dance.

On Thursday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. Indian culture will be celebrated with the screening of “RRR,” an epic blockbuster period film that won an Academy Award for best original song and was nominated for a Golden Globe for best foreign language film. The film will be screened at Papa’a Hale.

Pupus will be served both nights.
