Based on the quintessential 1980 movie of the same name, “9 to 5: The Musical” — with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton — tells the story of three female coworkers, pushed to the edge by their sexist and cruel boss, who take control of the office and make the changes they have always dreamed of.

Of course, to keep their boss out of the workplace, they do have to tie him to the ceiling of his home with a garage door opening mechanism, and his wife is due home from her vacation any day now. But they’ll cross that bridge when they come to it.

Fans of the movie will recognize Doralee, Judy and Violet (portrayed in the movie by Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlinson) plus other iconic characters like the love-struck secretary Roz Keith, the sleazy boss Mr. Franklin Hart, and the cheating husband, Dick.

This production is directed by the Aloha Theatre’s artistic director, Sara Athans, with vocal direction by Wendy Buzby and choreography by Alexis Gaines. Brett McCardle serves as stage manager with Leah McCandless as assistant.

It features performances from Justine Smith as Violet, Grace Klinges as Judy and Lydia Bolles as Doralee.

Miles Gerlach takes on the role of Franklin Hart with Jacque Gupton as Roz Keith.

In the male ensemble, audiences will see Miles Morris as Joe, Chris Munjar as Dick, Liam Chemnick as Dwayne and James Haddock as Bob.

Rayna Dusho as Maria, Stephanie Pilolla as Margaret and Kendall Hadock as Kathy share office space with Brooke Aragon, Jackie Baldwin, Taylor Deskin, Anna Lei Leuenberger, Ryan Leinbach, Francesca Libarona, Ruby Martinet and Katrina Zavalney in the ensemble and as various other roles.

Light design is by Jeff Rowand, and sound design is by Jamie Hughes.

Costumes were designed by Debby Stern. Hair and wigs are done by Judy Tringali. Makeup design is by Audrey McCandless, assisted by Scarlette Burnham.

Toby McCandless, Izzi Bowen, Sophia Costas, Scarlette Burnham, and Hal Snyder serve as board operators.

“9 to 5: The Musical” opened at the Aloha Theatre on Friday, Feb. 16, and runs for four weekends, closing on Sunday, March 10.

This production runs about 2 hours 15 minutes, plus one 15-minute intermission. This play is appropriate for audiences aged 13-plus.
