The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) boys volleyball season continued Tuesday across the isle, as the regular season has just a few games remaining before BIIF playoffs begin next week with Division II playoffs.

KONA 3, KA ‘UMEKE 0

The Ka ‘Umeke Ka‘eo PCS boys volleyball team suffered a loss at its final home game of the season — falling in straight sets of 25-12, 25-20 and 25-21 to Konawaena High on Tuesday at Kawananakoa Gym in Keaukaha.

The Wildcats remained undefeated, moving to 9-0 and maintaining their No. 1 standing in BIIF Division II as they approach their final regular season outing — an away game on Friday at Honoka‘a High.

Ka ‘Umeke fell to 2-7, and is now also one game out from its season finale. Ka ‘Umeke’s final game will be Saturday morning against Kanu ‘o ka ‘Aina Charter (2-7) at Waimea District Park. The two teams are now tied for the No. 8 standing in BIIF DII, which is also the lowest playoff berth in the league. Saturday’s result will determine which of the league’s two Hawaiian immersion charter schools will achieve a program-first entry into the BIIF playoffs.

WAIAKEA 3, KEA‘AU 1

Waiakea High’s boys varsity volleyball team won its third game on the season and second over Kea‘au, prevailing against the Cougars in a tight, four-set battle on Tuesday night in Hilo.

The Warriors won the first set 25-15, then Kea‘au won the second 25-21. Waiakea won the next two in a row — 25-20 and 26-24.

Now 3-6, the Warriors will next face Hilo High on Friday at home. The last time the cross-town rivals squared up was more than a month ago, when the Vikings came away with the sweep.

Kea‘au dropped to 1-9, and will round off its regular season with two home games next week — versus Hilo on Monday and Kealakehe High on Wednesday.

KOHALA 3, HPA 1

Kohala boys volleyball handled business against Hawaii Prep on Tuesday in Kapaau — beating Ka Makani in straight sets.

HPA won the first set 25-21, but the Cowboys adjusted quickly after. Kohala won the next set 25-18, followed by a narrow 28-26 third-frame win. To close the night out, the Cowboys won the fourth and final set by a score of 25-19.

With the win, Kohala elevated to 6-3 on the year and is now tied for the No. 4 spot in the BIIF Division II standings with Parker (as of Wednesday afternoon, April 17). The two teams played for the tiebreaker Wednesday night in the Cowboys’ home gym, with results to be shared in Friday’s paper.

Ka Makani (4-5) sit in sixth in the standings, and will try to move up with its next match against Honoka‘a at 6 p.m. tonight inside HPA’s Castle Gym in Waimea. The Dragons are right behind the red and white in the standings with a 3-5 record, and will try to move up the latter in the matchup.
