Origami class Tuesday

The Friends of the Libraries Kona hosts an origami craft program from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Michelle Strohbehn will teach how to make an origami crane, honu and horse. This all-ages program is offered free to the public. For more information contact the library at 327-4327.

Book club meets Tuesday at library

The Kona Library Book Club meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday to discuss this month’s selection, “Room,” by Emma Donoghue. The club meets on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library. There will be discussion and light refreshments. New members are welcome.

“The Warmth of Other Suns,” by Isabel Wilkerson, will be discussed when the club meets in May.

Project Grad extends student discount rate

Because of donations from the community, the Project Grad 2012 committee is able to extend a discounted rate of $45 to any remaining Kealakehe and West Hawaii Explorations Academy seniors who would like to attend this year’s event. Sign up at graduation practice and pay with cash or check or via PayPal at khsprojectgrad.com. The committee cannot guarantee logo hoodie size availability after this week.

The next meeting for Kealakehe Project Grad is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday in the library workroom. Parents interested in helping with the all-night, drug- and alcohol-free event are encouraged to attend. Contact Monica Balanay at 896-1866 or Jeannie Kutsunai.

Makahiki slated
for Saturday

The 101st Makahiki will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Old Kona Airport Park. A flag presentation will kick off the event. With the Kona Coast and Hamakua/Kohala Districts participating, there will be nonstop activities, including pinewood derby, cooking and camping skills, knots and lashing demonstrations, crafts and games, paper airplanes, egg drop, rain gutter regatta and food and drinks.

For adults there will be a “show and shine” car show.

Sunday concert
honors boy prince

The Daughters of Hawaii presents “Afternoon at Hulihee’ beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hulihee Palace, a musical event to remember the late Prince Albert. The Merrie Monarchs and kumu hula Etua Lopes and his Halau Na Pua Ui O Hawaii will perform.

“Afternoon at Hulihee” is part of the palace’s series of free monthly concerts honoring Hawaii’s past monarchs and historical figures; donations are appreciated. Those attending should bring a beach mat or chair since seating won’t be provided.

Hulihee Palace is open for self-guided tours. Museum and gift shop hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Palace admission, which includes a self-guided tour brochure, is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and $1 for keiki younger than 18. Volunteers are sometimes available for guided tours.
