Cancer support group meeting Thursday

You’ll Never Walk Alone, a cancer support group, meets from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Cancer survivors and co-survivors are invited to attend the group’s free meetings, held the first and third Thursdays of every month; light refreshments are served.

Disability advocate available Friday

A Hawaii Disability Rights Center advocate will be at the West Hawaii Civic Center from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday. Hawaii Disability Rights Center protects and advocates for human, civil and legal rights of people with disabilities.

Hui Laulima
meeting Friday

West Hawaii Hui Laulima meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday at the West Hawaii Community Health Center’s ground-level community meeting room in Kailua-Kona.

Brenda Larson, West Hawaii coordinator for Coalition for a Tobacco Free Hawaii, will give a brief overview of legislation the group hopes to introduce to the Hawaii County Council. For more information, visit tobaccofreehawaii.org.

In addition, the hui will continue to determine the next steps, as well as its role in establishing a detoxification center in West Hawaii and providing transitional resources for domestic violence victims.

Orchid society meeting Friday

The Kona Orchid Society meets at 6 p.m. Friday at the Hualalai Academy Bridge Building, 74-4966 Kealakaa St., Kailua-Kona.

Karen Kimmerle of Island Sun Orchids will speak on vandas and their culture. Members will display some of their orchids and talk about them.

A potluck dinner will begin at 6:15 p.m.; bring a dish or drink to share. A drawing for orchids is planned. New members are welcome.

Lai Opua offers financial seminars

Lai Opua 2020-Kau i ka Malie Multimedia Cultural Center along with AXA Advisors is hosting a free financial wellness seminar series to educate the community on topics including basic financial planning, college savings, long-term care and estate planning. A free dinner event is planned from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Lai Opua pavilion. Attendees will learn about the seminars and be able to register for them.

The first seminar, Financial Strategies 101: Dollars and Sense, begins at 5:30 p.m. April 11 at the Kau i ka Malie Multimedia Cultural Center on the Kealakehe High School campus. Participants will learn how to set goals, pay themselves first, keep emergency reserves and use their company’s retirement plans.
