The Schatz Seniors Internship Program attracted high school applicants from across the state. Thirty high school seniors, made up of public, private, charter and homeschool students will participate in the inaugural program.
Schatz Seniors from Hawaii Island are Finn Gallagher, Konawaena High School; Scott Fetz and Walter Disney III, both students at Hawaii Preparatory Academy; and Pomaikai Iaea, Ke Kula O Nawahiokalaniopuu, Keaau.
“This internship provides a hands-on learning experience for these young leaders about the U.S. Senate,” said Sen. Brian Schatz. “Our seniors recently attended our Hawaii Family Issues Summit where they worked with our community outreach team to garner feedback from residents about the things that are top-of-mind here at home.”
The Schatz Seniors internship program provides a hands-on opportunity to high school seniors interested in learning about the U.S. Senate. Students work with outreach staff and help to identify issues of interest in their schools and communities. They also attend and staff special events co-hosted by the senator. As part of the program, all students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average. Interns were selected based on their community involvement, diversity of interests and demonstrated leadership qualities. Eighteen students represent Oahu, six are from Maui, four are from Hawaii Island and two hail from Kauai.
Applications for next year’s Schatz Seniors Internship Program will be available at schatz.senate.gov in August.
