Kailua Village Artists will feature underwater marine life photographer Cynthia Hankins in January. The current collection of Hankins’ work focuses on the marine life and the ocean environment of the Big Island.

The public is invited to meet Hankins Jan. 17 and 24 at the gallery at 75-5729 Alii Drive, Suite C-110, in Kona Marketplace.

Hankins graduated from University of California at Santa Cruz in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Wanting to study the different animals, fish and plants further Hankins began taking photographs to document and study the underwater world. She learned photography on her own and soon a casual hobby became an obsession. By merging her scientific knowledge with an artistic eye, she’s able to create unique and compelling images of the underwater world. She moved to Kona in 2005 to be able to dive year-round and pursue a full-time career as a photographer. Her mission is to create beautiful, compelling images that inspire and captivate the viewer and to educate people about the value of marine resources. Find out more about Hankins’ work at cynthiahankins.com.

The gallery is open 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. for more information, call 329-6653.
