Mainland students seek information about Hawaii
West Hawaii Today regularly receives inquiries and requests from elementary school children from other states seeking information about Hawaii, soliciting postcards, maps and other information for a school project. Typically their requests are about land forms, landmarks and famous people.

Students representing Kealakehe at island Mathcounts competition
Mathcounts Coach William Schwartz mentored about 20 students at Kealakehe Intermediate School. These students stayed after school, one day a week for 10 weeks, not because they were in trouble, but because they wanted to challenge themselves with difficult math problems. The problems were created by engineers and presented to the students through the national Mathcounts program.
Kealakehe Intermediate has completed its school level competition. Eighth-graders Hope Kudo, Alden Transfiguracion, Zion Frost and Kealaula Nahuina will represent the school at the Big Island competition Feb. 1 at Keaau Middle School. The competition is open to all public and private intermediate schools on Hawaii Island. Top scorers will compete on Oahu against the state’s top math students.
The Mathcounts Competition Series provides an environment for students to reach their potential, to take pride in their abilities, and to work with peers who share and value their curiosity and determination.
Parker debaters win fourth trophy
Parker School’s debate team won the sweepstakes trophy for the most ballots won at the Punahou School Speech and Debate Non-Qualifying Tournament Dec. 21 on Oahu. Parker earned 65 ballots while second-place Punahou took 46. For the first time in Parker history, the team has won a sweepstakes trophy at all three tournaments it has entered this school year. At a November tournament at St. Louis School on Oahu, Parker won trophies for highest percentage of wins and largest number of ballots won. The team has won four out of six possible sweepstakes trophies over the three tournaments.
Thirty Parker debaters attended the Punahou tournament in which 20 schools participated.
These are the top results for Parker students: Ryp Ring and Brian Toubman scored 5-1 in Beginning Public Forum Debate; Savannah Harriman-Pote scored 5-1 in Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate; and Carrie Hiller finished 5-1 in Championship Lincoln-Douglas.
Parker will host the Neighbor Island Speech and Debate Qualifying Tournament Friday and Saturday. Twenty Oahu school teams will travel to Waimea to compete.

Kealakehe High SCC meets Thursday
Kealakehe High School Community Council meets from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the school’s staff cafeteria dining room.
