Smartphone, tablet use information program planned
The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce presents its April Brown Bag Briefing, “Maximize your Smartphone and Tablet for Your Business Use” from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the West Hawaii Civic Center Community Hale. This informational program will show attendees how to make the most of their smartphone or tablets for business use. Guest presenter is Bruce Bohannon of Wireless Advocates/Costco.

Pacific Islander Heritage Day held Saturday
Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site will offer its annual Pacific Islander Heritage Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the park’s visitor center. The free event celebrates the cultures of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Hawaii and other Pacific island regions with cultural demonstrations, canoe rides and dance.
This event celebrates National Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which is May.

Pa‘u Workshop slated Saturday
Local ranchers and equestrians will present the annual Pa‘u Workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Kona Historical Society. Designed for participants of this year’s King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade on June 14 in Kailua-Kona, the workshop will focus on the fine points of the Hawaiian equestrian tradition known as “pa‘u.” Classes include lei making for horse and rider, the wrapping of the pa‘u (skirt), riding protocol and history. The workshop will be taught by equestrians and historians Barbara Nobriga, DeeDee Bertelmann, Hannah Springer and others. The public is invited to attend.

One Island holds Earth Day event
One Island, a nonprofit education center sponsored by Heritage Ranch Inc., is inviting the public to an afternoon of storytelling, hula and water practice history in celebration of Earth Day at 1 p.m. Saturday at Konea o Kukui, a streamside garden sanctuary in North Kohala.

Brunch benefits children’s program
Friends of the Children of West Hawaii invites the public to its annual benefit brunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Huggo’s restaurant on Alii Drive. All proceeds will go to helping children in the community who have been neglected, abused, or have witnessed violent crime. The goal is to “help a victim become a child again.”

Concert benefits church program
The Rev. Dan Paul, pastor of the Christian Church of Pacific Grove, Calif., and an accomplished musician, speaker and leader, will perform in a benefit concert at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua. He will be accompanied by organist John Skykun, one of the founding fathers of the electronic keyboard and a former keyboardist for Neil Diamond. Refreshments will be provided after the concert.

AARP driver class scheduled Monday
Kona Palisades Association is sponsoring an AARPsmart driver class at 1 p.m. Monday at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive
The class is a new, updated version of the safe driver class and includes a new video and updates to the student workbook. It does not include driving or written tests. It covers all of the subjects that may affect drivers as they age with updated information and geared toward the learning attitudes of older drivers

Amateur Radio Society meeting Sunday
The Kona Amateur Radio Society meets from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.
All members, friends, and those interested in amateur radio are invited. A healthy food potluck picnic in celebration of Earth Day will take place during the meeting and attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share.
