Waimea Arts Council’s Firehouse Gallery will feature the work of member photographers at the May exhibit “Photography is Art. Really!”
The exhibit opens May 7 and runs through May 25. The art of photography will be celebrated at a reception for the artists from 5 to 7 p.m. May 9 at the gallery.
The word photography is derived from two Greek words photos, meaning light, and graphos, meaning to draw. Thus, photography is often described as drawing with light. The exhibit will show how award-winning photographers have orchestrated the light to present their artistic vision in photographic form. Member photographers exhibiting in this show will include Sam Cudney, Judy Folk, Bernt Grundseth, Susan Harris, Joe Laceby, Kris Lockhard, Tim Pervinkler and Barbara Schaefer.
In addition to work from Firehouse Gallery photographers, young artists who have been participating in a photographic workshop at the gallery will have their work exhibited. This special workshop program was made possible through a grant from Young Brothers.
Since April showers bring May flowers, the Back Gallery’s theme for the month will be flowers. Member artists will present their flowers in a variety of media.
Waimea Arts Council is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the arts on Hawaii Island. The Firehouse Gallery, located in the old Waimea firehouse, 67-1202 Mamalahoa Highway at the intersection with the Kawaihae Road, is the council’s most visible project.
